    Welcome to Joe’s Deli, the fine, family-friendly deli restaurant and community institution in Rocky River on Cleveland’s West Side.

    A mainstay in the Cleveland-area dining scene, Joe’s has been a fixture on Hilliard Boulevard in Rocky River since 1994. We underwent a big change recently, opening a spacious new restaurant just west of the former Joe’s Deli in June 2012. What hasn’t changed is our familiar menu, portions, prices and family-friendly atmosphere.

    Joe and Jeannette Kanaan have owned and operated Joe’s Deli on Hilliard Boulevard in Rocky River since 1994. Joe’s is renowned for its corned beef, pastrami, BLTs, Mediterranean and Middle Eastern entrees, fresh salads, delicious breakfast items and desserts. Joe’s has also long been cherished by Cleveland-area diners for its reasonable prices, generous portions, home-style simplicity and warm, welcoming neighborhood atmosphere.

    In 2012, Joe’s moved next door to a spacious new building at the southeast corner of Hilliard Boulevard and Wooster Road. The impetus for the move to the new building was to more efficiently serve our diners, many of whom have grown accustomed to sometimes having to wait for a table due to Joe’s Deli’s remarkably consistent popularity.

    The roomy dining space in Joe’s new building seats 185; the previous restaurant next door, which was razed to create more parking space, seated 120. The move resulted in an additional 50 spaces in our reconfigured parking lot.

    Joe’s airy new building is ringed with large windows that provide striking views of the neighborhood. The new and improved Joe’s also includes a coffee bar, a separate area for pickup of takeout orders and handicapped-accessible restrooms.

  • History

    Joe and Jeanette Kanaan opened Joe’s Deli on Hilliard Boulevard near Rocky River’s eastern edge in 1994. Before opening the restaurant, Joe had worked as a plumber; Jeanette was raised in a restaurant family.

    In fact, the story of Jeanette’s restaurant family — the Abdallahs — is really where the story of Joe’s Deli begins.

    Jeanette’s brother, Ralph Abdallah, the eldest child of a large Lebanese family, emigrated from Lebanon to the United States in 1956 at age 21. He spent a short time in the service and then lived in Canada for a brief period. Eventually, Ralph moved in with a cousin in Cleveland, where he opened a grocery and deli across the street from Fenn College (the forerunner of Cleveland State University) on Cleveland’s near East Side.

    Ralph’s grocery-deli business grew, eventually enabling him to help the rest of his family move from Lebanon to Cleveland in 1965. Shortly thereafter, Ralph took over a small restaurant on St. Clair Avenue called Larry’s Ham and Eggs as its owner was preparing to retire. Ralph operated that establishment, which served a largely Jewish clientele, with help from his brothers and sisters, including his youngest sister, Jeanette. Ralph eventually changed the restaurant’s name to Slyman’s — his grandfather’s last name — and it grew into the Cleveland dining institution that it remains today.

    As Ralph’s brothers, sisters and other relatives grew and started getting married and having their own families, many of them learned the restaurant business working at Slyman’s. Several of them went on to open similarly styled delis and restaurants, most of which are still going strong today — including the West Side culinary jewel Joe’s Deli in Rocky River.
